York College women's lacrosse win's first-ever NCAA Tournament game

The Spartans beat Washington & Lee, 13-6.

The York College women's lacrosse team won their first-ever NCAA Tournament game with a win over Washington & Lee as the Spartans had to wait through a three hour and five minute weather delay to earn a 13-6 victory at Kinsley Field.

The Spartans looked fantastic in the opening 15 minutes of the game as they dominated the Generals in the early going. York's Leah Schultz found the back of the net just 1:19 into the contest as the Spartans seized the early lead. Kim Wayson followed Schultz with a goal just 41 seconds later, putting the Spartans up 2-0.

The Green and White reeled off five more goals as the lead grew to 7-0 with 14:37 remaining in the half. The Generals netted back-to-back goals just over a minute apart to draw the guests to within five. The Spartans answered with goals from Schultz and Wayson, increasing the York lead to 9-2 with 6:08 left in the opening 30 minutes of play.

The Generals scored two of the final three goals of the half as Meade Brewster and Ameia Murcott scored to cut the Spartan lead to 10-4 at the break.

After the lengthy delay, the Spartans wasted little time in opening the second half scoring as Megan Stine found the back of the cage just 1:09 into the stanza. That would be the only goal over the first 14 minutes of the second half, as the teams never really regained the energy level that was on display in the first half.

Schultz struck for her fifth goal of the game at the 15:17 mark, increasing the York lead to 12-4. The Generals would get two goals from Brewster in the final 6:57, sandwiching an Erica Mulford tally to provide for the final 13-6 margin.

Ashley Smith was outstanding in the pipes for the Spartans as she notched eight saves in her 60 minutes of work. Smith improves to 13-3 with the victory.

Schultz led the Spartans with six points on five goals and one assist. She also had two draw controls and a pair of caused turnovers. Mulford added four points on three goals and one assist while Wayson finished her final game at Kinsley Field with three goals. Stine contributed three points on a goal and two assists while Kasie White handed out a career-high tying three assists.

The Spartans now advance to face Franklin & Marshall College in the Sweet 16 on Saturday at Salisbury University.
